A PHILOSOPHICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE ATTENTION TRAINING TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED BY Adrian Wells: Forms of the Subject's Relationship with their Dysfunctional Thoughts
In fact, the Attention Training Technique developed by Adrian Wells (2009) seeks to interrupt the act of Thinking or rumination that a Homo sapiens Subject performs and enable the Homo sapiens Subject to regain control of their Attention.
That is, Attention Training seeks to replace the act of Thinking or the Subject's attachment to their Dysfunctional Thoughts with the act of Attention that provides detachment and tranquility to the Homo sapiens Subject.
Self-focused Attention, directed towards the self, as referred to by Adrian Wells (2009), is not Attention, but rather the act of Thinking, or the clinging or molding of the Homo sapiens Subject to their own Dysfunctional Thoughts.
Thus, three ways in which the Homo sapiens Subject relates to their Dysfunctional Thoughts stand out:
1. Unconscious Thinking Form (UTF): The Homo sapiens Subject performs the act of Thinking by clinging to or molding themselves to their Dysfunctional Thoughts, resulting in emotional disorders such as Anxiety and Depression.
2. Reflective Conscious Form (RCF): The Homo sapiens Subject performs the act of Reflecting, through Questioning, relating their Dysfunctional Thoughts to other Thoughts or situations, resulting in Wisdom.
3. Attentional Conscious Form (ACF): The Homo sapiens Subject performs the act of Attention, observing with admiration the flow of their Dysfunctional Thoughts, resulting in Serenity.
