You cannot make remembrance grow
When it has lost its Root ―
The tightening of the soil around
And setting it upright
Deceives perhaps the Universe
But not retrieves the Plant ―
Real Memory, like Cedar Feet
Is shod in Adamant ―
Nor can you cut Remembrance down
When it shall once have grown ―
Its Iron Buds will sprout anew
However everthrown ―

A lembrança, ninguém a faz crescer
Quando perdeu a raiz.
Apertar-se em volta a terra,
Mantê-la ereta, talvez
Possa enganar o universo,
Mas não recupera a planta.
A memória verdadeira
É como o cedro ― tem pés
Calçados em diamante.
Nem se pense que adiante
Cortá-la, se já arraigou:
Seus brotos de ferro irrompem
Novamente, se alguém a derrubou.
